Language Arts Syllabus |
| This syllabus is written to include visual perception of language, writing skills and phonological awareness. The physical environment is designed to support literacy learning. Stories and songs are used to promote playful learning with engaging material to informally but intentionally draw children’s attention to the sounds of language. All efforts are made to provide a print rich environment with developmentally appropriate experiences in all areas of language arts. Literacy in humanities and science play a large part in the program allowing the children to record and journal their experiences. |

Language Development Objective: |
1. Hears and discriminates sounds of language. Expresses self using words and expanded sentences. Understands and follows oral directions
2. Plays with words, sounds, and rhymes.
3. Recognizes and invents rhymes and repetitive phrases, recognizes words that start in the same way.
4. Plays with sounds to create new words.
5. Uses correct inflection when speaking.
6. Recognizes differences and asks questions about parts of speech. |

1. Reading aloud.
2. Word Games using phonemes.
3. Daily penmanship includes Journaling.
4. Sentence structure includes.
5. Word Wall Words: Introduction to sight words. Lessons include gross motor activities and structured homework.
6. Use of flash cards and fast paced gross motor activities.
7. Rhyming and alliteration in dramatic readings and recitations

Math Syllabus |
The objective of the Math syllabus for the K4 program at Chautauqua Day School is to teach the understanding of numbers, ways of representing numbers and the relationship between numbers. The children will learn to recognize, repeat and create patterns. The students will make predictions about patterns and measurement.
The program will include geometry and spatial sense. The lessons will guide them through recognizing, building, describing, comparing and sorting two and three dimensional shapes.
Measurement of space, time, mass and temperature will be a big part of the math program. The children keep a measurement journal and are taught practical uses for measurement.
Daily arithmetic games reinforce concrete use of numbers.
A "Question of the day" is posed to help the children investigate, organize, and create representations of data. This is a fun way to include math every day! |

Social Studies Syllabus |
|
The children in K4/K5 will have every opportunity to explore social situations and settings through dramatic play.
Our Garden Cottage is set up to imitate a real home. The children have their size furnishings and trimmings to learn about responsibility through play.
We learn about other cultures through art, music, and customs of other countries.
The children learn to be sensitive to other children’s needs and feelings through character building play.
The children will explore our community visiting important historical and educational destinations.
We will adopt a soldier to correspond with. We will send gifts to the soldier and to the children where that soldier is stationed.
In December the K4 class will visit a retirement community to sing songs and present home baked gifts. |

Art Syllabus |
Children produce their own theories from which they take inspiration.
The children in the K4/K5 Program have complete artistic freedom. Children experience art daily at Chautauqua Day School. The following are all part of the daily curriculum for all of the children.

Art is used to teach in all areas to promote in depth understanding of topics. Through Art children develop socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively.
The K4/K5 Class are featured artists in the annual Art Makes Me Smart art show. Every January is art and artists month at Chautauqua Day School. Our school becomes an art gallery in February to display the children’s work. Parents and friends are invited to view the beautiful art work at an evening gala. The children’s art work is sold to raise funds to purchase more art supplies. This event is a wonderful experience for the children and their families. |

Technology Syllabus |
|
The objective of a technology course in a K4/K5 class is to give the children the ability to be comfortable with technology. They will begin and then advance in reading and writing skills. Important math skills and concepts of numerical relationships will be a 20 minute block of their day. The children will use creative expression to write a chapter book of their own and illustrate it using a special program. The children will solve problems and begin to do research.
The lessons begin with basic operations and concepts of technology. The children will all practice using the mouse and key board for 20 minutes each day.
They will experience the use of developmentally appropriate programs in all academic areas.
A great joy will be the music they compose together and share with the school.
Each child will be taught to use the computer independently. The children will be taught to stay engaged with the program running and to advance through the program as they need to complete a task.
This will be the first formal class of technology education at Chautauqua Day School. It will evolve as the children advance through the school year to their fullest potential.
All intended lesson plans may be extended or limited to fit the needs of the students in the program. Each child will be taught to their fullest academic potential. The lessons are written to include field trips, art projects, and dramatic presentation.
