Avery, the Director's son has Autism

Chautauqua Dayschool welcomes children with Autism.
We welcome children ages two through six who have a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum,
inclusive of Aspberger's Syndrome, PDDNOS, and Sensory Integration Disorder.
Chautauqua Dayschool works to support your child’s healthy development. In a creative, happy and balanced learning environment every child is encouraged to communicate effectively. Your child
will learn how to be more independent and participate in social and recreational activities.
Chautauqua Dayschool is guided firmly in ABA Based Therapies. We recognize the value of and implement the use of Discrete Trial Training, Pivotal Response Training and Picture Exchange Communication. The educators at Chautauqua Dayschool recommend Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapies as part of our standard ABA curriculum. We will follow your chosen goals as our directive for each child. We welcome your chosen therapists and shadows to join us at school. This will help acclimate your child to our social and academic school setting. The class size is very small. This ensures your child will have optimum time with teachers and have a small peer group base.
Avery is happily acclimated into public school. He works as a student coach and presenter of a character education program. He discusses his life's perspective living on the spectrum and teaches typical children how he perceives the world and what it is like to be more sensitive to light and sound. This program allows typical children to have the opportunity to ask questions of people who have Autism.
Your therapists are welcome to visit the school prior to
enrollment to help us provide the best learning environment for your
child.

Dance/Movement Therapy Classes for your child with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Kathleen Allison is a Masters Degreed Teacher in Dance and Education. Movement classes and family workshops are held in the Academy of Dance Arts studio at the Chautauqua Center.
Dance and Movement Therapy is a way to bring joy to your child. Direct expression through the body is a powerful medium for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These Classes increase body awareness, concentration and sense of spatial relationships. Physical movement increases flexibility, strength, and coordination. These classes teach child centered approach to decision making. Empathy is taught through mimicry. Mirroring is taught to strengthen and reflect true emotions. Rhythm based experiences place an importance on group motion. This is of pivotal importance in making social connections.
Chautauqua Day School is committed to helping individuals with Autism reach their full potential.
Parent and Child Movement Classes
Children and their care providers work together in these classes. Parents and children work as a team moving together and interacting with each other to make strong bonds. Lessons are taught that can be reinforced at home to teach calming effects and redirection of inappropriate behavior.
Independent Dance and Movement Therapy Classes
Children who are working on more independent behavior can enjoy small classes. We work using yoga, Pilates and traditional dance movement. Music is used to connect the brain to physical movement establishing a critical path between auditory processing and visual cues. Great Joy is experienced while children learn autonomy and freedom of movement.
